Exeter community contacts: councils, groups and useful services

Find the right starting point for Exeter council services, local organisations, activities and help across the city and its neighbouring communities.

Start with the service and your address

Exeter has city and county council services. Exeter City Council is the starting point for city matters such as household collections, council tax, housing and local planning. Devon County Council covers services including roads, education, adult social care and libraries. Use the relevant council’s current service pages for the actual enquiry.

A postal address containing Exeter does not always mean the property is inside the city council boundary. This matters in nearby places such as Exminster, Broadclyst and Cranbrook. Check the council serving your address before reporting a problem or completing an application.

Finding activities and community support

Exeter Community Initiatives works with people and communities locally, while CoLab brings organisations together at Wat Tyler House. Their websites explain the current projects and routes into support; individual services can have different eligibility, referral or appointment arrangements.

When contacting a group, briefly explain what you are looking for and whether you need an activity, advice or a place to meet. Ask about accessibility, cost and whether a first visit needs booking. A venue address alone does not establish that a particular service is available as a walk-in.

Meeting spaces and regular groups

Exeter Library on Castle Street is a useful city-centre meeting point, with books, computers and printing services. Its own library page links to activities and facilities, making it a good place to begin when looking for something regular to join.

The directory’s community and leisure category brings together local organisations alongside other local services. Listings describe the organisation’s work; use the provider’s own timetable or booking page for the date you want.

Keep everyday information current

Travel Devon is a useful place to start for transport information, while Devon’s council website links to library and wider public-service information. Save the current service page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a timetable passed around in a group chat.

This directory is an independent local guide. For personal casework, applications or an existing enquiry, contact the organisation responsible through its official channels. If a business listing has changed, use the directory contact page to flag the details that need checking.
