Shopping in Exeter: independent streets, gifts and everyday finds

Explore Exeter’s independent shops, from Fore Street and McCoys Arcade to Gandy Street, Magdalen Road and a separate Topsham trip.

Pick a neighbourhood to explore

Start with the kind of shopping you actually want to do. The High Street and Princesshay offer a different visit from the smaller shops around Fore Street, Gandy Street or Magdalen Road. Choose one area for a first circuit, then add another if you have time rather than rushing between every shopping district.

A shopping trip here can take several forms: a High Street errand, a browse through Fore Street’s smaller shops or an outing to Magdalen Road. Visit Exeter’s shopping pages give a wider view of the city’s different retail areas.

Fore Street and the independent quarter

McCoys Arcade is a useful stop for specific interests: Bookbag sells books, while Hops and Crafts has its own bottle-shop offer and visiting arrangements. Along Fore Street, Bunyip Craft focuses on making supplies and workshops. Check the business’s own page if you need a particular title, material or session.

Fore Street rewards a browse as well as a purposeful visit. Turn into McCoys Arcade, look through the smaller shop windows and leave time for a drink; the independent businesses are part of what makes this stretch different from the High Street.

Gifts, flowers and the Quayside

Leaf Street is one of Magdalen Road’s stops for flowers and gifts. This is a useful neighbourhood to explore when you would like a smaller shopping area rather than a circuit of the main centre. For a made-to-order bouquet, contact the florist about the occasion and delivery.

Quay Presents adds gift shopping to a Quayside visit. Browse beside the river, then combine the stop with a meal or a walk among the former trading buildings. It makes a different outing from the High Street and Princesshay.

Make local searches specific

Topsham can suit a separate shopping trip, with specialist shops and its own local centre. Confirm the business’s address and opening information before leaving Exeter’s centre; the directory includes surrounding communities as well as city businesses.

Use our shops and retail category to find suppliers, then read each listing for what is actually offered. Search for the product or service you need, compare collection and delivery options, and ask before assuming that an online range is held in the shop.
