Give local customers a useful starting point
If you run a business in Exeter, a directory listing should help someone decide whether to contact you. State what you do, where you are based and who you serve. A short, specific explanation of your work is more useful than a string of broad claims about quality.
ExeterDirectory.uk offers free Standard listings submitted for review. It covers the city and nearby communities, with categories for food, retail, trades, health, transport, professional services, community activities and pets. Inclusion is subject to review; submitting a listing does not promise immediate publication or a particular search position.
Use the area where you are actually based
A Marsh Barton workshop, a Pinhoe service business, a St Leonards salon and a Topsham shop need different location details. Use your real base and explain the places you travel to. If you work from a surrounding village, say so; serving Exeter is different from having premises in the city centre.
Choose the category that best matches the main business, then select the relevant service tags. Only choose services you actually offer. Tell visitors whether they can walk in, need an appointment or should arrange a quotation before visiting.
Prepare the details before submitting
Write an original description in plain language. Explain your main services, useful specialisms and practical arrangements such as collection, delivery or on-site work. Include a working website and phone number so visitors can take the next step.
Use a clear photograph of your premises, work or products, or a readable business logo. Check that you have permission to use it, and avoid an image whose important detail sits at the very edge. Provide the email address the business controls; the form’s public-email choice is separate from the private contact needed to manage the listing.
Check before creating another entry
Search for your business first. The directory may already contain a researched listing, and a duplicate can confuse visitors. Open the existing page and use its management route where appropriate; owner edit links are sent to the address on file, so contact the directory if that address needs checking.
Keep your website, business profile and directory details consistent as your business changes. Check your phone, services and address after a move or rebrand. A useful listing can support your wider local presence, but it does not replace your own website or guarantee enquiries.
When the details are ready, submit them for review and use the contact page for questions about an existing entry.
