Begin with one main visit
The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery on Queen Street is a useful starting point for a day of history, collections and exhibitions. Look at the current programme before travelling: a particular exhibition or family activity may need its own booking even when you are planning a general museum visit.
Queen Street makes an easy starting point for a city visit: spend time in RAMM, then continue towards the High Street and Cathedral Green. Keeping the museum and cathedral on the same short route leaves room for a meal or an independent shop along the way.
Look above and below the streets
Exeter Cathedral offers another kind of visit, with the carved west front visible from the Green and separate visitor arrangements for the interior. Check the cathedral’s programme because services and events can affect the day you have in mind.
The Underground Passages are medieval water-supply tunnels, rather than a Roman attraction. A guided visit involves confined, narrow spaces: read the operator’s access information and booking rules before choosing it for your group. The heritage listing explains why these surviving conduits are significant.
Make room for the Quayside
The Quayside changes the pace after the centre, with former trading buildings, waterside businesses and paths beside the Exe. You can make it a short riverside stroll or the starting point for a longer outing; book water-based activities directly with their operators.
Topsham can form a separate outing instead of an extra stop squeezed into a city-centre afternoon. Check transport before making a one-way walk or cycle trip, especially if your group would prefer to return another way.
Plan an evening around the venue
Exeter Phoenix and Exeter Northcott add live performance to a city visit. Look through their programmes for a show that appeals, then leave time for dinner beforehand. The venue on your ticket is the important detail when planning the evening’s route.
Our community and leisure listings are another way to find groups, activities and places to spend time locally. Read what each organisation offers and contact it directly for current availability.
